Nixon Named President as Inauguration Begins

Richard M. Nixon prepares a prepared inaugural speech as Johnson steps down. A counter inauguration protest ball and parade mark the day. In Prague a 21 year old student Jan Palach set himself on fire to protest Soviet occupation. He remained in critical but conscious condition as doctors described his act as his duty and warned there will be others. Palach’s note called for press censorship to end and the Soviet propaganda sheet to be banned. If demands are not met a second burning was planned for Tuesday.

Trustees report the hospital insurance fund took in 100 million more than paid out and held 1.4 billion in assets for the year ending June 30. Over 25 years an unfavorably balanced fund is projected unless the tax base rises. A 4 monthly premium for supplementary medical insurance may rise.
