Ice clogged a 13 mile stretch of the lower Niagara River at Niagara Falls New York with minor thaw not breaking the blockage. The ice has caused extensive damage to boat facilities and shore property with some piles reaching up to 30 feet in height.
Ohio Highway Patrol cites excessive speed in a single vehicle crash on I 70 near Vandalia that killed Purdue University star Thomas E. Bloom 21. Teammates Tom Fugate 19 and Wallace Florence 20 were treated. Bloom was a Boilermaker halfback drafted by the Cleveland Browns. Bloom had 192 rushing yards and 13 receptions that season. a key play came against Michigan State on November 10 with a 47 yard interception return for a touchdown.
A steam boiler explosion at the Steubenville Elks Lodge damaged an office and interior walls, blew out a stairway and two glass doors, injuring 45 year old employee Miss Caroline Jacoby. More than $20,000 in damage reported as a crowd in the dining area and club rooms was shaken but unharmed.
A massive winter storm pummeled the central plains with 30 mile per hour winds and heavy snow. Temperatures plunged to subzero across the region including Nebraska Montana Colorado and the Dakotas.
