Ella Gants asked for a brass band for her 100th birthday. The 4th Division band from Ft. Lewis performed on the nursing home lawn in Tacoma, playing tunes including Happy Birthday to You while Maj. Gen. Claire E. Hutchin listened.
Atty Gen Robert F Kennedy forecasts Malaysia Indonesia Philippines will hold talks after initial discussions with Sukarno in Manila and Kuala Lumpur. He plans further talks in Jakarta next week and with UK PM Douglas-Home. Kennedy travels to Seoul to meet US troops and to London for broader talks.
Panamanian President Chiari ordered a break in diplomatic relations with the United States over the Canal Zone dispute. Most U S embassy staff evacuated to the Canal Zone as Panama recalled diplomats and Costa Rica agreed to handle Panamanian interests and U S diplomatic affairs. Khrushchev voiced support for Panama while U S aide Edwin Martin planned to stay. Memorial services were held for four American soldiers and nineteen Panamanians killed in last week’s riots.
Michigan Governor George Romney told about 1,150 at a Salt Lake City Republican fundraiser that the party must not exploit racial or religious prejudice to win votes. He said such tactics would betray Lincoln’s heritage and the Judeo Christian tradition. About 200 civil rights protesters gathered peacefully outside as Romney met several picketers. He told a Black demonstrator that he supported civil rights.
Sen Barry Goldwater’s regional campaign chief in the South says the GOP can count on an almost solid Southern bloc for the presidential bid. In Fayeteville Goldwater addressed a breakfast and in Kinston spoke to 1 200 at a Junior Chamber banquet calling critics fixated on quantity. Grenier claimed nine Southern states pledged support with North Carolina and Virginia as exceptions. Johnson’s White House bid hasn’t dented Southern GOP chances, Grenier says.
President Johnson told his full Cabinet that the government must tap more of the nation’s educated women. He ordered departments to examine the status of women and noted merit should guide promotions regardless of sex. Esther Peterson reported strong, receptive responses and cited a Civil Service study showing past resistance to women in supervisory roles.
