Gavin favors fighting war from strong bases
Retired Army Lt. Gen. James E. Gavin argues in Harper's February issue that Viet Nam could be fought more effectively from coastal enclaves such as Cam Ranh Bay and Da Nang. He warns against broad bombing of North Viet Nam and urges diplomacy to end the fighting, citing risks of drawing China or Korea into war. Gavin notes Current U.S. strategy mixes enclaves with search and destroy and says forces in South Viet Nam already cover coastlines with sea and air power.
