Pittsburgh AP report says United Mine Workers strike strategy led to company stores cutting credit for six miners, with Union Supply, part of U. S. Steel, trimming credit across coal regions. About 74,000 of 400,000 soft coal miners are idle as the strike widens.
Lexington AP reports John L. Lewis and United Mine Workers officials are accused in a federal court suit of restraining trade and commerce through a three day work week in coal mines. Four Harlan County operators seek 177,450 in damages. prior suits in Ohio and Pennsylvania allege over 8,000,000 in similar actions.
In western Pennsylvania a small rescue band nears an entombed miner, Edward Burda, 25, as hope fades. His brother Joseph was rescued earlier. rescuers inch toward an open space behind the car amid debris with air drills and blasting sound.
A Columbus man who said he is the husband of Mrs. America of 1946 faces a vagrancy charge in New York. Detective Harold Kelly says Marion Pollack, 32, also known as Mark Pollack, claimed the name while claiming marriage to the former Mrs. America. The woman sought a divorce last week and noted she did not know his whereabouts.
Henry J. Allen, 81, former U S senator and Kansas governor, died just after 6 am. He had been ill for weeks. A leading party orator at the height of his career, Allen was less active in recent decades. He had been a newspaper editor and publisher in Kansas for half a century and chaired the Wichita Beacon board at his death.
LAS ANGELES AP report describes Arthur Drake a former Naval lieutenant 25 defending his brother during a cafe holdup. Drake fired after the intruder Franklin George Debendier 31 shot, killing the robber and wounding Drake who was hospitalized but not in danger. Debendier was identified as a writer by his wife Marie.
Oshkosh Wisconsin AP report describes hundreds of cars stranded on a large ice floe on Lake Winnebago after a wind saved a crack. About 450 cars and 1,000 ice anglers were rescued to shore by a Conservation Department truck with a guiding ice bridge. Police said most cars elsewhere on the ice were also driven to land. only 26 remained in the Oshkosh area.

Washington AP reports hopeful but wary dairy state senators push for a Senate vote on a House repealer of oleomargarine taxes. The substitute includes a 28 million dollar cut in excise taxes and a ban on yellow oleomargarine in interstate commerce. Senator Aiken called the outcome a toss-up as 25 senators joined the effort and others warned of likely defeat.
Police hunt for thieves who stole a truck, rummaged through its cargo, and absconded with about 2000 dollars worth of men's suits and topcoats. Driver Walter Schafter, 37, left the keys in the ignition while checking bills of lading and returned to find the vehicle missing.
President Truman may publicly enter the fight for control of the House as Administration leaders count on his stance. Aiming to restore to the Rules Committee its former power to pigeonhole bills, Republicans and southern Democrats push to end a 21 day delay limit. The House vote on restoring the old rule is expected late this month.
A 23 year old Charles Martin halted flights at Midway by racing a gasoline truck down runways after an Eastern Airlines fuel crash into a landed American Airlines jet. He told police he had been drinking but no charges were filed immediately. Police and fire crews pursued as two airliners circled awaiting clearance.
Three Dayton residents Warren Smith 23 John Hardin 30 and Ella Landis 59 were killed when their car was struck by New York Central Train No 302 two miles south of Dayton at 12 18 a.m. Coroner A P McDonald said all were Frigidaire Division employees of General Motors. A witness said a southbound train had just cleared the crossing.
Mor Ris Ackerman outdoors editor for the Scripps-Howard newspapers died in Sebring Florida at age 66. The body will be taken to Cleveland for funeral services. Ackerman formerly worked for the Cleveland Press.
Arthur J. Altmeyer, social security administrator, testified as the first witness before the Senate Finance Committee on President Truman's 1950 plan for broader coverage and higher benefits. The House already approved a bill extending coverage to about 11 million more people and boosting monthly benefits by about 70 percent for recipients, with further increases for those not yet retired. The plan includes a payroll tax rise from 1 percent to 3.1 percent by 1970. Senate leaders Georgia and Millikin indicated alignment with the House on broader coverage and larger benefits.
Manila AP reports two American professors, Marvin Pittman and Robert Conklin, killed on a remote trail 150 miles north of Manila. Ifugao guides and village chiefs plotted the murder, then feasted on dog meat bought with the victims’ money.
Gustav Krupp Von Bohren and Halbach dies at 79 in Salzburg Austria. He built Big Bertha and other World War I weapons for Germany. He was partially paralyzed since the war and did not face trial due to illness. Funeral set for Thursday.

Vincennes braces against a potential 20 to 28 percent flood level as crews sandbag and reinforce for the possible 30 foot crest, with volunteers aiding floodwall defense while thousands face possible evacuation.
