Oradour massacre suspect Lammerding dies before trial
Heinrich Lammerding, former SS General and head of the Das Reich division, dies in West Germany at 65. The 1944 Oradour sur Glane massacre killed 642 villagers. French justice pursued charges in absentia for Lammerding, but extradition barriers and postwar agreements prevented his prosecution. The case leaves a lasting demand for accountability as surviving witnesses recall the atrocities.
