News Strike Hurts Little Stores In New York

Ed Dennehy reports the newspaper strike harms small NYC luncheonettes like Phil Simon’s in Queens. With New York papers scarce, Simon loses 600 to 700 dollars weekly, cuts staff, and sees a 50 percent drop in business as customers switch to out of state editions and subway routines. He notes deliveries of Newark and Philadelphia papers help, but local dailies are blocked. Affected outlets rely on scarce out-of-area papers and higher costs, while customers seek early editions and later issues elsewhere.
