Law Struck Down By Court Over Virginia Statute
The U S Supreme Court struck down a Virginia law the NAACP said curtailed its participation in racial discrimination cases. Justice Brennan ruled the measure violated the federal guarantee of free speech, regardless of race or discrimination ties. The statute criminalized underwriting costs and counsel in such suits, a move NAACP called aimed at suppressing its legal work. Virginia had upheld the law as a tool to regulate business by lawyers amid massive resistance to desegregation.
