Ohio lawmakers revive plan to study Lake Erie gas wells

A House-Senate Conference Committee will meet to revive a bill to test drill natural gas wells in Lake Erie. the plan would extend the drilling ban for oil and gas beyond July 1, 1978, except for three test wells. A Shafer Exploration report estimates five years and 75 million dollars to yield gas comparable to Canada, and finds drilling both economically feasible and environmentally safe. Senate sponsor Sen. Calabrese notes testing would precede any broader drilling, with oil drilling still under moratorium. Rep. Boggs opposes the plan, predicting House defeat, while the final approval rests with both chambers.
