Price Cuts Predicted As Buying Falls Off
NEW YORK The post-Christmas sales rush prompts retailers at the 38th annual National Retail Dry Goods Association convention to expect selective price cuts. They foresee lower prices by category rather than a general drop, with demand and value balancing to fit budgets, though wage increases or higher government spending could push prices up. Chiefs like Charles G. Nichols of G. M. McKelvey Co and M. J. Greenbaum of the Association of Buying Offices note varied reductions tied to supply and demand, and consumer discrimination driving higher unit sales until profits occur.
