A ground floor paper carton factory sparked a fire in a Brooklyn tenement, forcing mass evacuation in zero cold. Firemen battled 42 hours, pulling 13 bodies including nine children from two families as 14 firefighters and 15 civilians injured.
Washington AP Charles L Schultze Budget Bureau director resigns becoming second top economic adviser to quit within a week. Charles J Zwick named to succeed him and will join Brookings after brief stay ending July 1 budget prep. Schultze says he leaves to return to teaching and research at Maryland and Brookings role.
Mike Kasperak 54, after a heart transplant at Stanford, remains in critical condition with stomach and intestinal bleeding and kidney and liver complications. Despite breathing assistance and near normal cardiac output, doctors say the heart is functioning well but his overall condition is fragile.
John Grey Gorton was elected leader of the Liberal party and poised to become Australia’s prime minister after Holt’s disappearance. At 56, he edged out Paul Hasluck, Leslie Bury, and Billy Snedden, with Bury and Snedden eliminated on the first ballot. Gorton, a WWII fighter pilot and Oxford MA, vowed to press on with national goals and foreign policy.
Southwest Ohio and the Valley enjoyed a brief warm spell with temperatures around 16 degrees above normal overnight. Light snow of up to 3 inches is forecast in the valley, possibly into the evening, with tonight’s low in the 20s after a high near 26. Cold againWednesday with 20s and more light snow.
Capetown doctors report Dr Philip Blaiberg shows steady improvement a week after receiving a new heart in the world’s third such transplant. Barnard says Blaiberg could be discharged in about two weeks if progress continues.
President Johnson and Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol ended talks at the LBJ Ranch with a pledge to keep Israel’s defense capability under active examination. They discussed Arab arms resupply and the pace of rearmament, while reaffirming a commitment to a just and lasting peace. No pledge to sell 50 F 4 Phantom jets was made.
