Civil Rights Bill Faces House Rules Committee Hearing
The civil rights bill backed by Johnson moves to the House Rules Committee for hearings and potential clearance to the floor. Howard W. Smith leads the opposition as more than twenty witnesses, mostly Southern, are expected to testify over the next two weeks amid concerns the bill could be weakened to pass a Senate filibuster. The action follows Johnson's recent State of the Union endorsement and recalls Kennedy's assassination timing.
