Reputed Klansman pleads innocent in civil rights killings

Edgar Ray Killen, a frail 79 year old former Ku Klux Klan leader, pleaded not guilty to three murder charges in the 1964 killings of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. Mississippi officials indicted him after a grand jury decision marking renewed state action in the case. The arraignment noted Killen’s long association with the murders, with FBI records and witnesses linking him to organizing Klansmen who ambushed the workers. Prosecutors said no other charges or death penalty are planned, and a lawyer may be appointed if he cannot afford one.
