President elect Carter meets with 13 Democratic leaders in Plains to discuss a possible one shot tax rebate plus a permanent tax cut. He seeks quick relief to spur the economy while keeping long term reforms in view. House Speaker O Neill names priority for tax legislation.
CDC officials report mounting evidence that Guillain Baron e syndrome is a reaction to the swine flu vaccine. The vaccination program was halted after rising paralysis cases. 21 deaths have occurred, 12 among the vaccinated and eight among the unvaccinated. Blood tests and former polio vaccine records are being reviewed to assess connections.
IRS reports some taxpayers have received the new 1040 forms ahead of the anticipated mid January mail. Congress pushed redesigns after the Tax Reform Act of 1976 signed Oct 4. Most forms still ship by January 15 with guidance to contact IRS if not received by late January.
The Journal announces a new weekly religion column titled The Sawdust Trail starting Saturday. Art Toalston directs the feature inviting local clergymen and residents of Middletown to share faith based experiences and viewpoints from Christians, Jews, and others.
Miami AP reports hobbyists can grow coffee trees but must accept slow yields. Specialist Paul Soderholm notes arabica trees need tropical or subtropical conditions, take about 14 months to reach one foot, begin fruiting after three years, and yield roughly three pounds of fruit yearly for one pound of ground coffee.
Gov. James A. Rhodes proclaimed January 9 to 16 as Write Your Governor Week and urged constituents to send letters with ideas and complaints. He promised to answer each letter as he seeks public input ahead of a State of the State message and a Jan. 12 joint legislature session.
