The National Safety Council warned the three day New Year holiday could produce more than 400 traffic deaths if Friday’s pace continued. Through Friday the toll averaged six per hour, with one six hour span showing over ten fatalities for highway deaths in stormy western and midwestern states.
The Associated Press reports 11 people killed on Ohio roads since Thursday 6 p.m. as New Year holiday travel sharpens. Victims include Louis Beck 24 of Cincinnati in a 75 foot fall from the C and O bridge, Eugene Latham 25 near Batavia after a motorcycle crash, Loren Atherton 57 of Springfield in a loss of control on a rural road, and Louis McMasters 23 of Forest after leaving Ohio 53 and hitting a pole.
A six year old girl with extensive bruising and a slight brain concussion is in fair condition at Middletown Hospital. Her mother Arbutus Gumm 21 is jailed facing child abuse and neglect charges. Also held is Denny Lawson 23 at the Thomas Road address. Authorities say belt use and neglect may be involved.
Floyd E. Hargrove, a 35 year old truck driver, is arrested on a first degree murder warrant for the Christmas Eve sniper slaying of Charles R. Clark in Mentor Lake County Ohio. Investigators say new evidence prompted the arrest after Hargrove had previously been cleared by a polygraph.
In a Sheffield pub on New Year s Day a quiet stranger rose from a table and sang then fired a revolver. One man died instantly and two died later in hospital. two more were critically wounded. Police arrested the gunman with no motive given.
The American freighter Valley Forge ran aground and broke apart 50 miles south of Singapore as a rescue operation searched for 22 missing crewmen. Eight crew members were saved by the salvage tug Griper, seven were found on a refuge island, and efforts continued amid heavy seas and gale winds.

Police seek public help after Rev. Vincent L. Belle 38 is shot three times at point blank range in a Holy Cross parish garage. An apparent ambush left no gun, shells, or signs of a break in. Belle, six feet five and 230 pounds, had no known enemies and was en route to visit ill parishioners.

An 11 year old blind girl Janice Mitrenga was saved from a seven room North Side bungalow fire by neighbor Walter Troska after he forced a window and entered amid heavy smoke. The girl's mother Anne Mitrenga and her uncle Edward Mitrenga led three younger children to safety while the father Theodore was on duty. Janice, nearly blind since birth, hopes to see Troska someday and recently had eye surgery promising better vision.
In Dallas Love Field moving sidewalks caught Tina Marie Brandon, three years old, and crushed her to death Friday night. Police and firemen freed her after crowds delayed access. her parents learned of the accident when they heard her brother scream.
