A two hour melee at Fort Lauderdale beach involved about 1500 youths. Police used tear gas to end the riot, arresting 42 people with no serious injuries or property damage reported. Rocks bottles and weighted beer cans were thrown at officers as the disturbance began shortly after midnight.
A standard order to disperse was broadcast with no compliance and police restored order using tear gas. Police charged those arrested with resisting arrest disorderly intoxication and inciting to riot. Last year a New Year’s Eve disturbance drew about 3000 people with 27 arrests 14 injuries and 3000 dollars in damage.
