Sell Term Plan To Rank-and-File UMW Miners In 1979 Pact

About 400 United Mine Workers officials and district reps will be briefed today on how to sell the proposed soft coal contract to 160,000 striking miners. Ratification is expected next week in 2100 local halls with education sessions beforehand. The deal includes a 37 percent wage rise over three years and an immediate $1 an hour raise, moving typical pay to about $80 a day by 1980. It also shifts health and pension costs to miners, imposes limited penalties for wildcat strikes, and ties some benefits to hours worked rather than coal mined.
