Tragic Fire Claims Man and Two Young Children in Middletown

A one story frame home on Sheridan Avenue in South Middletown burned, killing Anthony Riley and two Hurley children Lavonda age 3 and Danny age 2. Riley reportedly pushed Brenda Hurley and another son Tim outside before returning to rescue the others as a hydrant froze delaying fight. Fire crews from three units battled the blaze for about 20 minutes, but all rescues failed. The state fire marshal will investigate the cause.

Minnesota to seek third Supreme Court bid to close Reserve Mining

Minnesota will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to close Reserve Mining Co. for the third time. PCA director Grant Merritt said the move aims to bring the case before the high court if the 8th Circuit does not rule by Jan. 31. Plaintiffs include the Justice Department and Minnesota Wisconsin and Michigan over discharges into Lake Superior from the Silver Bay plant.
