Spy vs Spy Rivalries Highlight Army Domestic Surveillance
Former Army intelligence coordinator Lawrence Lane testified that domestic spy work at Ft Carson fostered rivalries as agents watched each other to gauge competition. He recalled a 1969 antiwar rally where 53 agents surveilled 66 civilians, an example of rival factions monitoring one another. Lane and Oliver Pierce described bickering among units including the 113th Military Intelligence Group. A September 1969 rally drew far fewer protesters than expected, with 119 present including agents from multiple commands.
