In Boston thousands of Negro and white students sat out classes today to protest de facto segregation. About 37 freedom schools operated by 600 volunteers aided the boycott, called a freedom stay-out, with 14,000 Negro students in 13 schools identified as affected.
Civil rights groups warned of further demonstrations after 172 350 Chicago pupils were absent in the second public school boycott. Officials noted heavy absenteeism in Black districts, while CCCO claimed over 125 000 students were kept home. Police reported 1 500 pickets around City Hall with no arrests.
Former President Herbert Hoover, age 89, shows definite improvement after a pulmonary infection and kidney bleeding. Doctors say infection responds to therapy, kidney bleeding stopped, but respiratory difficulty persists and no hospital move is planned. The bulletin notes normal blood pressure and heart rhythm with no heart failure signs.
Kathy Dorn, 17, editor of Mercy High School's student newspaper in Albany, has been blind since birth. She swims bowls skis sings and plays instruments while visiting doctors, reading to hospitalized children, and inspiring in-community facilities for the blind. The Pope and President Kennedy commended her courage and abilities.
In Dallas six jurors have been sworn for Jack Ruby's murder trial. lawyers expect a full panel by week’s end or early next week. Prospective jurors include Luther Dickerson and Douglas Sowell, both Air Force veterans, along with a woman and two men already seated. The defense argues Dallas County is biased and seeks a venue change whileRuby faces possible execution for the Lee Harvey Oswald killing.
Waterfront unions resume loading U S wheat for the Soviet Union after a 10 day boycott. President Johnson commits that half of future grain cargoes will be carried on U S ships, ending a dispute over non American tonnage and noting Continental Grain Co deals excepted.
In Los Angeles the government prepares for FBI testimony after Mrs. Dennis Gray described the ransom money as nearly 200000 dollars of funds used by Barry Keenan Joseph Amsler and John Irwin in the December 8 1963 Sinatra Jr kidnapping. The trial heard the Gray account of money play and hunger requests before the expected continued witnesses.
Miami AP bulletin says the state attorney requested medical records from Lenny Liston following his defeat by Cassius Clay on Tuesday night. Recall details appear on the sports page.
Carole Tyler, secretary to Bobby Baker, refused to answer questions about her role in the former aide’s affairs. She cited constitutional grounds and invoked the Fifth Amendment. The Rules Committee heard Baker refuse to answer over 100 questions and consider contempt penalties.
The $11.5 billion tax cut bill nears final enactment with Senate action planned today and President Johnson poised to sign. The measure slashes individual rates about 19 percent on average and cuts corporate taxes by about 9 percent, with some brackets and credits affecting low and high earners. Paychecks from March 4 may reflect the new withholding rate.
In Nicosia President Makarios orders a 5000 member special police to disarm irregulars and defend independence. He invites Turkish Cypriots to join if loyal and vowed to prosecute illegal arms import. The move provokes constitutional questions and raises total Greek Cypriot armed strength near 7000.
Federal agents planned an investigation into the alleged theft of 2000 phenobarbital pills from Civil Defense disaster supplies at the University of Akron. A university spokesman said a maintenance worker found the missing pills two weeks ago after locating an empty carton in a tunnel area where the narcotics are stored.
James R. Hoffa testified that he never bribed jurors in the 1962 conspiracy trial and labeled one accuser a liar. The Teamsters leader wrapped up his defense in a sixth week trial in Chattanooga alleging attempted jury tampering. The Nashville jury mistrial in 1962 is cited.
