Libya’s Abuzd Omar Dorda denounces the downing of a Boeing 727 by Israeli fighters as premeditated mass murder. He says the plane was about to land when shot, killing 112 of 113 aboard, including passengers of various nationalities, and accuses pilots of deliberate, aligned actions.
Israel for the first time accepts part of the blame for downing a Libyan airliner over the Sinai Desert amid Mubarak tensions with Egypt. Defense Minister Dayan says misinterpretation of the Boe 727’s presence may be at fault while citing crew and Cairo tower as primary at fault. Elazar and the army chief acknowledge ordering the shoot to prevent escape of the plane.
A discarded match started a blaze at the Larry Taylor Sohio service station at Oxford State Road and Yankee Road. Damage estimated at 50000 dollars. A 1969 Corvette owned by Bill J. Lewis, parked inside, burned. Lewis and workers escaped injury.
Some recently liberated American officers reportedly plan to file criminal charges against former comrades only after all U S POWs return home. Pentagon officials urge forgiveness, but vets allegedly distrustful due to claims others betrayed fellow POWs by sharing information with the North Vietnamese.

Across South Vietnam the fighting eased for a third day though cease-fire violations remained above one hundred. In the Mekong Delta three shells hit Tri Ton, killing 12 and wounding 10. one shell burst near a conference room of the Joint Military Commission in a schoolyard. Peking reports Lao Pathet Lao command ordered intensified fighting after the cease-fire, amid Laotian government accusations of repeated violations.

Washington AP report notes the first standby draft lottery for two million men turning 19 this year will be held March 8 though no one may be drafted as the armed forces run on a volunteer basis. Acting Selective Service head Byron V. Pepitone will announce lottery details next week.
