Lakota levy fails with plans for new schools and cuts

Lakota district faced a failed levy that would have funded about 5 million dollars yearly for 26 years to build two elementary schools near Independence and Smith roads and a second freshman campus on Bethany Road. Renovations would add space for 600 students at Lakota East and West high schools and update Hopewell and Liberty elementaries. If approved, a 5.6 mill operating levy would raise roughly 12 million annually. After the failure, 3 million in permanent cuts were already made, with 4 million more announced, including 60 teaching positions.
