In San Francisco the first Hearst supported free food handout faced violence and confusion as crowds disrupted four centers. In East Oakland 5,000 gathered for bags, but a truck could not reach the distribution area and fighters hurled projectiles. Police scattered the mob after property damage and minor injuries.
Atlanta editor Reg Murphy, seized for 49 hours, was released unharmed after the FBI arrested William A Halm Williams and Betty Williams of Lilburn Ga. The $700000 ransom was recovered at their home. The FBI cited Hobbs Act violations as part of the charges. Murphy described his captors as members of the American Revolutionary Army.
The trans-Alaska pipeline owners raise startup capacity to 1.2 million barrels daily from 600000, boosting Sohio ownership and debt ratio while partners pay less of total cost. Construction begins in spring pending April permits as trucks cross the Yukon ice bridge before spring melt.
