Four persons died and nine were hospitalized after a predawn fire ripped through a three story brick building in Harrisonburg Virginia. Firemen said two victims were children and two were adults with bodies recovered from the ruins at daybreak.
Oakland California report says Ronnie Bombardner eight years old and his mother Juanita 38 died in a house fire after he ran back to try to rescue her. His sister Darlene ten escaped.

A heavy snowstorm blanketed the Midwest then moved into the Northeast, dropping three to eight inches in many areas with drifts up to 15 feet. Anita Rogers, 37, a divorcee and friend of James M. Cox Jr., shot herself during a heated discussion at her mother’s home in Miami Beach. County medical examiner ruled the death a suicide. Cox, head of the Miami News, identified Rogers as the shooter after the event following a funeral and dinner gathering.
The forecast shows continued cold with tonight's low around 15 to 17 degrees and a high near 30 tomorrow. Cloudy conditions bring possible snow flurries. Middletown reached 33 degrees at 8 p.m. yesterday, with a 13 degree low this morning and about three quarters of an inch of snow from the weekend.
In Oberlin Ohio a flash fire destroyed a one story home killing seven children of the Isom and Malone families. Flames fed by an oil heater spread to two rear bedrooms while two four year olds and three adults escaped unharmed. Firefighters faced a tinder box and candles were suspected after power to the house had been cut. The victims, all Negro, include Sheila Linda Dennis Marshelle William Diane and Martin Jr. The parents Sylvia Malone and Lucille Isom were among the survivors.
Ohio logged its deadliest weekend in years with at least 14 traffic deaths 8 fire deaths and 3 miscellaneous fatalities across 34 hours ending Sunday midnight. A Friday night fire claimed the first life and seven children died in a Oberlin house fire Sunday night amid two other major incidents.
In Somerville New Jersey a mother became lost while searchers hunted for two missing 9 year olds, Todd Lunna and playmate Stewart Wes. More than 40 state troopers and volunteers joined the search for about an hour before spotting the boys and later finding Mrs. Lunna wandering in the woods.
A cowboy found a sun damaged plane wreck in a deep canyon in Big Bend country near the Mexican border. Three bodies were recovered identified as West Love 28 and Jim Harrington 28 both of Marfa Texas and Mexican national Fred Gado. Darrel York spotted the wreckage four miles west of Sawtooth Mountain while tending cattle on the Clovis Moore Ranch. The plane had been missing since January 4 en route from Alpine to Presidio.
Edward T Gardner 80 co founder of Gardner Division of Diamond National Corp died at his Oakwood home. He led the firm for 37 years as president and later chairman before relinquishing in 194. Born Sept 16 1879 in Middletown he helped form the company in 1900 with Colin Gardner and George H Harvey.
President Eisenhower departs from Andrews for a four nation, 14 day trip to strengthen U S relations with Latin America. In a predeparture speech he touts nuclear bomber strength and missiles as a trustworthy shield of peace and says the United States and its allies can stand resolute against Soviet threats. First stop is San Juan Puerto Rico, then Ramey AFB to spend the night.
President Eisenhower lands in San Juan at 10 53 a m EST for a stopover on a four nation South American tour itinerary.
President Eisenhower will begin a 15,560 mile South American tour, visiting Brasilia and seven more cities across Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay before returning to Washington on March 6. He dedicated much of a radio TV address to his aims, defending U S military policy and arguing the program seeks world peace and stability in Latin America.
President Eisenhower stressed no neglect of U S interests in maintaining close relations with neighboring nations in the hemisphere. He said his trip aims to reassure them and he is ready to discuss any problems with these nations and offer U S help where possible.
President Eisenhower departed Andrews Air Force Base at 7 49 a m in a swept wing jet transport for a 14 day 15 560 mile mission to Latin America. The cold weather and low clouds did not dampen his mood as Vice President Nixon and several Cabinet members saw him off. Mrs Eisenhower remained at the White House while Herter accompanies the trip.
