Improper federal funding at major cancer lab revealed
Congressional investigators fault the National Cancer Institute for allowing the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases Omaha to receive 22.8 million dollars since 1968. An ad hoc committee guidance was ignored, undermining review procedures. In Towson Maryland a fireman found Red Skelton's 155000 dollar diamond ring after a benefit performance, initially thinking it was junk due to its glassy appearance.

Warning on saccharin warns of cancer risk
Washington AP reports saccharin containing foods and drinks must bear a government warning that the additive may be hazardous to health. Labels must appear on items shipped across state lines today, though some products already on shelves may lack the warning. The FDA proposed a ban due to studies linking saccharin to bladder cancer in male rats and limited human data. Congress delayed the ban for 18 months last November.
