Honolulu AP dispatch reports President Nixon warning that no quick solutions to US problems would be expected as he prepared for the second leg of his trip to China.
A propane leak after a tanker crashed with a Greyhound bus and two cars shut a 16 mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike from Exits 2 to 3. 22 people were injured. the tanker overturned and fuel leaked as responders worked to halt seepage and clear the scene.
Winter weather returns to Ohio with a low near 15 tonight and highs in the 20s tomorrow. Snow flurries are possible with no accumulation, followed by a warming trend to the 50s by Tuesday afternoon.
Two young men robbed 13 passengers on a Shaker Rapid Transit car in Cleveland taking 785 dollars and 54 dollars in change from the farebox. Motorman Mihalina said a pistol was pointed and passengers were threatened but no injuries were reported. The bandits fled at East 55th Street after starting at East 34th Street and were spotted at Shaker Square.
In Buenos Aires 104 passengers and nearly 50 crew from the rescue ship Piloto Pardo arrived after the Lindblad Explorer ran aground off King George Island in a severe storm. Passengers spoke of relief and praised both the Norwegian crew and Chilean rescuers. two octogenarians reflected on the ordeal.
Miss Anna Marie Pages of Camp Pages Washington DC was aboard the Lindblad Explorer when it grounded near land. Passengers abandoned to lifeboats but later returned aboard as the ship remained aground, with refloating estimated at $200,000 and managed by Lars-Eric Lindblad.
New Delhi announced it is prepared to hold direct talks with Pakistan at any time and level with no preconditions in a letter to UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim. The move follows a two week war that ended with the creation of Bangladesh. Bhutto in Lahore said he planned to meet Gandhi and Mujibur Rahman, but did not specify tripartite or separate talks.
An Air Force jet trainer and a transport plane collided 15 miles north of Little Rock Arkansas killing all five crewmen aboard the transport. The two occupants of the jet trainer parachuted to safety. Witnesses said both planes exploded and crashed near a busy highway east of the base.
Three Ohio companies Buckeye Sugars Inc Ot tawa Lima Lead Supply Inc and Thornbred Co all face state wildlife division charges for discharging waste into rivers and ditches. Buckeye Sugars dumping into Blanchard River Jan 1 with Feb 24 trial in Putnam County Court. Lima Lead Supply accused of sulphuric acid into Ottawa River tributary Dec 13 1971 with Feb 23 trial in Lima Municipal Court. Thornbred Co accused of dumping animal parts fat and grease into a ditch feeding Little Miami River with Feb 23 Warren County Court hearing.
California’s high court ruled 6 to 1 that capital punishment violates the state constitution and reduced 102 death sentences to life. Sirhan Sirhan and Charles Manson were among those affected. The decision leaves 680 inmates on death rows in other states unaffected. Some officials praised the ruling while Gov Reagan sought a court review and lawmakers eyed a constitutional amendment. Mary Sirhan welcomed the ruling, thanking God.
