Major Battle Near Laos Base Hammers Saigon Forces
North Vietnamese troops attacked a South Vietnamese artillery base six miles inside Laos, part of a triad overlooking the Ho Chi Minh trail. American helicopters could not extract 80 wounded Marines and search for a missing U.S. crewman as mortars rockets and heavy weapons pounded the position. Helicopters and gunships ferried near the base, but pilots reported heavy concealment by enemy positions. The base lies 10 miles south of the demilitarized zone and nine miles north of Highway 9.
