President Nixon begins a ground breaking trip to Communist China aimed at easing decades of hostility. About 1,000 area school children were drawn into the departure ceremony with TV coverage arranged and honor guard troops assigned. no band was planned per White House clarification.
President Nixon and Mrs Nixon depart for China on February 21 for a ten day stay, the longest single country visit by a U S president since Woodrow Wilson. He summoned Congress leaders to the White House for talks before leaving and will fly to Oahu and Guam en route to the Chinese mainland. Nixon warned the trip should not raise great optimism or pessimism, saying twenty years of hostility cannot be erased in a week of talks.
The Senate voted 81 to 0 to require the President to submit every international agreement to Congress, sensitive or not, amid proposals on war declaration procedures and executive deals on Azores and Bahrain bases. Critics warn executive agreements outnumber treaties, shaping policy with limited oversight.
Billionaire recluse Howard Hughes returned secretly to the United States after about 15 months in seclusion in the Bahamas. A Bahamian official said the report could not be confirmed and Hughes’ whereabouts were unknown. Immigration officials reportedly raided his Britannia Beach Hotel suite to check staff work permits as a C46 cargo plane carried items from the suite to Nassau airport.
Gov. John J. Gilligan in Cleveland backs a 25 percent federal tax credit to deter relocation of PESCO Borg Warner and Square D plants. He says Ohio should offer staff help and services while subcommittee merges seven tax bills, aiming to halt a regional economic hemorrhage of job losses and plant closings.
Barry Richardson, a 15 year Cleveland cabbie, picked up a man on East 96th Street who fled to Akron with a $30 fare. The robber, armed with a .38 pistol, forced the cab to a private mental hospital in Cuyahoga Falls then back to Cleveland before demanding change for a $100 bill. He fled after payment issues. a warrant was issued for pointing a firearm.
The Dayton Power and Light Co. received PUCO approval to stop accepting new natural gas customers in its service area including Butler Warren Preble and Chautauqua counties. Existing firm customers may connect by October 31, while new residential inquiries will not be served. Cincinnati Gas & Electric said residential gas remains for smaller uses, with restrictions on growth continuing. The PUCO ruling orders large Ohio gas distributors to halt promotional efforts and curb new supply, with specifics varied by company and use type.
