President Kennedy is expected to announce a plan to accelerate spending of some federal funds to boost the economy and curb unemployment. The 7 p.m. news conference will be carried live on nationwide TV and radio with questions on Congo and UN issues following the assassination of Congo Premier Patrice Lumumba.
The Vinson Owen figure skating clan led by Maribel Vinson Owen and daughters Laurence Owen and Maribel Owen were killed in a Brussels plane crash. Laurence, 16, had just won the North American women’s title in Philadelphia. Maribel, 20, and their mother coached them and held multiple U.S. titles. Maribel had served as AP skating expert at four Olympic Games and was famed for precise scoring.
Ohio penitentiary trusty Thomas L. Wilson, 37, of Dayton, walked away from a work detail at the Bureau of Motors Vehicles tag warehouse Tuesday afternoon. Wilson, serving four years of a 20‑to‑life sentence for bank burglary and auto theft, is described as six feet tall, 145 pounds, with a brown felt hat, gray leather jacket, khaki trousers, brown shoes, nearly bald and wearing horn‑rimmed glasses. He is subject to search by authorities.
Washington AP reports NASA propulsion expert Kurt Stehling told the National Rocket Club that the United States cannot launch a Venus probe for about three years. He warned that no amount of strain or effort could exceed roughly 1,000 pounds into Venus orbit any sooner.

Redding California AP reports 1000 searchers with bloodhounds scour farmlands south of Redding for 8-year-old Vicki Lee Morris who disappeared after leaving a school bus near Anderson. Rain and cold prevail as searchlights sweep the foothills and a speaker truck broadcasts pleas from her parents, Mr and Mrs James Morris.
