Miners Defy Orders From Lewis Across Coal Regions

Striking soft coal miners remained defiant of government and John L. Lewis orders for a second day. In Pennsylvania 1700 pickets patrolled highways with no pit activity as deserts closed around idle mines. A Library Pennsylvania miner said locals may vote on actions this Saturday while pledging not to work without a contract. Rumors of nationwide idle workers numbered 372,000.

Ohio coal mines stay mostly idle as strike holds

Bellaire Ohio reports the coal mine strike front remains unbroken with only a handful of small shafts operating. Between 100 and 1,000 miners are employed at those sites while AML major mines sit idle and rank and file sentiment grim for a return to the pits this week.

Former Nazi Arrested In Murder Plot

In Hannover an elderly man was arrested on charges of plotting to kill West German President Theodor Heuss. Det. Chief Friderici Peter said the suspect confessed to abandoning the plan at the last moment to avoid killing hundreds at the Hanover railway station. The man’s identity was not released and his sanity is under examination.

Navy Veteran Receives First POW Payment

Navy veteran James Bigelow of Rockville received a POW payment of 1198 dollars as the first check from the War Claims Commission. About 250 other former POWs were to receive checks this week, with funds drawn from seized enemy assets and totals rising toward hundreds of millions for veterans and survivors. Bigelow, captured on Corregidor, wears an artificial leg from a mine injury and would not repeat the experience for any amount.

Czech Arrest Missionaries Near Moravia

Prague reports two American Mormon missionaries Stanley Abbott 23 of Lehi Utah and C Alden Johnson 22 of Idaho Falls Idaho were arrested for attempting to enter a prohibited area after disappearing January 28 while traveling through Moravia to visit LDS members near the border.
