The Labor Department reports January wholesale prices were unchanged after seasonal adjustment, with a four tenths of a percent rise unadjusted. Over the last three months prices fell at an adjusted annual rate, offsetting farm price declines and industrial gains.
Broadcasts from Lagos report a second military coup in Nigeria in under seven months. A lieutenant colonel announced the overthrow of Brig. Murtala Muhammed, dissolved the government, imposed travel bans and a curfew from 6 p m to 6 a m. The coup follows Gowon’s 1966 rise after a prior removal and marks Nigeria’s fourth coup since independence in 1960.
A London spokesperson quoted Lagos reports at 9:30 a.m. detailing Murtala’s overthrow by young revolutionaries. Lagos borders, ports and airfields were closed with a curfew 1800 to 0600, while government figures were uncertain on violence and conditions.
Actor Sal Mineo known for Rebel Without a Cause was stabbed to death outside his Hollywood apartment. Neighbors heard screams and saw a long haired man flee the alley as Mineo lay dying in a pool of blood behind his Sunset Strip area residence. He lived alone with family in New York and had Oscar nominations for Rebel Without a Cause and Exodus.
AP reports Western Onion resumes the singing telegram service for Valentine’s Day. Joshua Leeds and Myrica Taylor perform 1940s style tunes in bellhop outfits, crooning tunes like I’m Looking Over a Four Leaf Clover. Customers can compose their own tune, though Western Onion rejects dirty ditties.
HEW moves to bar doctors and dentists from selling Medicaid claims to collection agencies via power of attorney or factoring. The rule targets fraud risk where checks go to doctors but are cashed by agencies, potentially inflating bills and draining funds for aged and poor patients. The proposal seeks safeguards and to forbid payments to or through any factor or agent.
