Twenty seven American POWs arrive in Saigon after Viet Cong captivity ends, freed following an 11 hour delay. Ex-POWs step from six helicopters that carried them 75 miles from Loc Ninh, paper name tags fluttering.
Officials announced transfers to a C9A Nightingale flying hospital then to Clark Air Base in the Philippines. The first evacuee from Saigon helicopters, a young man on a stretcher, rose, smiled, and waved to about 75 cheering onlookers.
AP reports 143 prisoners of war freed from North and South Vietnam arrive at Clark Air Base. Navy Captain Jeremiah Denton Jr. is first to exit the hospital plane, praising the United States as doctors begin medical checks. A second group of 26 arrives from South Vietnam with one survivor remaining in Saigon.
