AP report from Joliet Illinois notes a downtown Grand Hotel blaze killed nine men, with fourteen rescued and five dead at scene. Three others injured, one missing. Firemen fought for over three hours in 8 below zero conditions. manager Robert Burnickey said all 27 rooms were occupied.
The Miami Valley will see rising temperatures while Middletown fares better than northern Ohio. Morning lows near zero are forecast for the north, with partly cloudy skies statewide Sunday. Only light snow flurries expected in the northeastern quarter. Middletown logged a near freezing temperature this morning, echoed across the state.
Communist China's premier and foreign minister denounced Soviet leaders at a large Peking rally, while about 100,000 protesters later gathered outside the Soviet Embassy to protest alleged Soviet violence and mishandling of Chinese students and diplomats in Moscow. Red Guards had been demonstrating at the embassy in Peking since January in support of the protest.
SAIGON, South Vietnam AP reports 17 Americans dead and 16 wounded as the four day lunar new year truce neared its end. From 8 a.m. Wednesday to 4 p.m. Friday U.S. and allied forces killed about 92 of the enemy and detained 53, officials said. The end of the truce was expected to see whether full scale operations would resume Sunday. Vietnamese casualties were described as light.

Washington AP The interior department acting secretary Charles F Luce sought to roll back gasoline price increases that could cost motorists a penny a gallon. He sent telegrams to eight oil firms protesting raises and to three others urging restraint. Texaco raised prices as Luce pressed for rescission. Phillips Petroleum replied that costs could not be absorbed and raised dealers prices. Other firms raising prices included American Oil Continental Oil Cities Service Gulf Sinclair Sunray Oil and Mobil. Luce urged Shell and Humble not to follow suit.
Arctic air sweeping from snowbound north central states moved southeast and south across the Midwest. Lows plunged to subzero levels in the Dakotas Minnesota and Wisconsin with -20 or lower in some spots. Gale warnings crowded the Great Lakes as strong winds drifted heavy snow and hindered roads from the Northeast to the Atlantic coast.
The 25th Amendment is now part of the Constitution after Nevada became the 38th state to ratify on Friday, completing the required majority. It allows the vice president to act if the president is disabled, with procedures involving Congress and cabinet approval. The proclamation will follow from the General Services Administration.
The 1937 General Motors sitdown strike in Flint ended after 44 days, launching the UAW as bargaining agent for GM workers. Riots in January left 28 injured, National Guardsmen deployed, and Plant No. 9 and Plant No. 4 scenes of clashes before GM recognized the union later that year.
