Congress advances a plan to scrap parts of President Ford's energy program within the next two weeks as lawmakers pursue an alternative approach to energy policy.
President Ford embarks on a tour to promote his energy policy after swearing in James T. Lynn as director of the Office of Management and Budget. Lynn succeeds Roy Ash as Edward H. Levi becomes attorney general. Ford plans Texas and Kansas stops and hosts a governors dinner in the Southwest. Democrats craft alternatives while Congress weighs a 90 day delay on the $3 a barrel oil import tax. Felicia Sanders dies of cancer at 53 in New York City.
Industry executives say broad lapels remain dominant for at least two more years while deeper vents belt jackets and no-vent styles gain favor. Attending designers Cardin Kaiserman Ruffini Dimitri Von Furstenberg and Cesarani showcased subdued colors and coordinated outfits suitable with shirts ties and turtle necks reflecting a US European blend.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger lands in Israel to gauge chances for a new Israeli Egyptian disengagement. Opposition leader Begin demands Rabin call elections before any surrender of Gidi and Mitla passes and Abu Rudeis oilfields. Kissinger plans a 10 day in region, possibly returning by March 10 to work on a possible agreement.
An Ohio audit begins after $225,937 in checks and certificates of deposit were found in unclaimed mail. A $206,523 certificate could not be located, with items including an $85,834 check from a Columbus bank and two CDs totaling $138,958. A receipt for the missing deposit was signed by former Unclaimed Funds director Douglas Russell.
In Canton Ohio Stark County Jackson Local School District teachers picketed five schools in subzero temperatures as contract talks remained deadlocked. The Jackson Memorial Education Association struck Friday after failing to reach a pay package agreement with district officials.
The Associated Press reports a large arctic high pressure system pushed bone chilling temperatures across Ohio. Sub zero readings covered most of the state Sunday night and Monday morning, with single digits in the southwest. Record lows were set at Findlay and another city.
Bitter cold temperatures spread from the northern Mississippi Valley to the Northeast with subzero marks reaching 18 below in New York State and similar readings in Minnesota Indiana and Illinois. Snow fell in the Rockies and in several western towns while Middletown Ohio expected near 20 by daybreak.
An FTC administrative law judge ruled that Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. violated federal trade laws by failing to stock or accurately price many advertised items. The decision cited a 1973 FTC store survey showing 13 percent of advertised goods were unavailable or overpriced across 80 A&P stores in 20 cities. The ruling is preliminary and subject to appeal.
Rabbi Baruch Korff described former President Richard Nixon as drained and emaciated by Watergate fallout. He noted Nixon hosted a staff farewell, kept up appearances, and still bears substantial legal and medical debts as the President Nixon Justice Fund seeks funds to cover bills.
