EDINBURGH Scotland AP The Soviet Union's giant new Sputnik passed over Edinburgh early today as announced Scientists at the Edinburgh Royal Observatory spotted the seven ton satellite after a telegram from Moscow told them when to watch for it It appeared as a second magnitude star before dawn but overcast prevented photography No radio signals have been heard from the satellite by Western scientists Moscow has given no progress report since the launch announcement The Edinburgh sighting was apparently the first in the Western world.
A historic snowfall paralyzed traffic from northern Virginia to West Virginia and Maryland, closing hundreds of schools and stranding vehicles. Two deaths occurred in Virginia from highway accidents as northern areas reported up to 29 inches with drifts of four to five feet. Maryland declared a state of emergency in Hagerstown where roofs collapsed, and West Virginia Guardsmen aided Terra Alta after heavy snow. Washington National Airport closed for the first daylight period in three years as 9 inches fell and 250 people were evacuated from Falls Church bowling alley before a roof collapse.
The forecast calls for mostly fair conditions with little temperature change. The low tonight is 22 degrees and Friday's high rises to 43. Yesterday's official high was 33 at 4:30 p.m. and the overnight low was 20 degrees recorded at 4:30 a.m. today.
In Batavia Ohio two Clermont County youths died when their car struck the rear of a vehicle driven by Paul McIntire 23 of Cincinnati at a dip in the road. Richard L Seibert 17 of near Perintown and Gary A Jackson 18 of near Batavia were the fatalities. McIntire was injured but listed in fair condition.
Frankie Robinson of the Cincinnati Reds, 25, was arrested early today on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon after an argument with two friends and two other men at a restaurant. Bail was posted hours later and he is due in court Friday. Police said Robinson pulled a pistol from his coat pocket and threatened the cook after being informed the weapon had been reported.
