In Toronto's West End eight children of Roy and Mrs. French perished in a blaze that swept their two story brick home. Roy French, 36, said an electric kettle overheated and exploded after he fell asleep. Neighbors raced inside to pull him from the flames while Mrs. French, 32, was hospitalized after shock.
In Athens Ohio AP a psychiatrist testified Gene Isaac Stees might have lost sanity suddenly and killed unwittingly if his rough childhood was real. Dr Dwight M Palmer of Ohio State University says a schizoid background could, under stress, trigger temporary insanity. Defense aims to show no premeditation and inability to tell right from wrong.
A blast of icy air from Canada, fanned by strong northerly winds, swept across the eastern half of the nation, ending a brief spell of mild weather. Temperatures fell below zero from Upper Michigan to northern Maine and upstate New York, with Pellston, Michigan at 19 below. The cold wave hit New England with near zero readings in many areas, winds up to 40 mph, gale warnings along coasts, and freezing conditions stretching from southeastern Pennsylvania to central Nebraska and the Dakotas. A conventional three story white brick mansion once inhabited by Samuel L. Clemens endured an estimated six thousand dollar loss due to a fire on Thursday night. The structure, vacant at the time, had housed Mark Twain and his wife Olivia Langdon during his Buffalo years, and Twain served as editor of the Buffalo Express in 1870 to 71.

In Columbus Ohio two youths Sheldon Higgons 13 and Donald Ellis 15 were critically burned when sniffing gasoline fumes atop a lit stove caused an explosion that destroyed the Hilltop Sportsman Club. Deputies say they poured gasoline into a coffee pot and sniffed fumes for kicks leading to an estimated $4000 in damage. They face charges for breaking into the club illicitly.
Junior Iraqi officers allied with Nasser disrupt Kassem regime in Baghdad taking defense ministry. Reports claim Kassem killed and generals arrested while border closures and air ports shut. Rebels form National Council of Revolutionary Command pledging nonalignment and oil profits for outside markets.
