In Little Rock, Charlie Nelms recalls a dog named Laddie who bit him after a scuffle. He had the pup asleep. Mrs. Nelms told the children Laddie was gone, sparking a memory reveal when a child asks for Laddie’s meal, thinking daddy had died.
A U S Coast Guard plane found actress Jayne Mansfield, her husband Mickey Hargitay, and friend Jack Drury on Rose Island near Nassau Bahamas after a day water skiing trip. The trio were picked up by a fishing boat the Blades and left for Nassau. The capsized boat found near the island had a broken steering bracket and no other gear.
Washington AP James E Webb NASA administrator says two Mercury astronauts will fly 18 orbits this year in 27 hours. Orbits reach 17,500 mph. Webb touts tests of living in space and notes 1962 plans include Oso solar observatory and Venus proximity probes Mariner craft weather and communications satellites Ranger lunar lander.
Cape Canaveral AP Tiros IV, the fourth in a line of weather satellites, launched aboard a Thor Delta at 7:44 a.m. and reached orbit about 400 miles high two hours later. Wallops Island tracked the craft as it completed its first orbit. cameras will begin transmitting while NASA pursues a global space weather system.
Studebaker-Packard Corp and the United Auto Workers announced a tentative agreement to end a six week walkout at the South Bend plant, affecting 6,200 striking workers. Walter P. Reuther said details would be withheld for a direct presentation to UAW Local 5 before a ratification vote over the weekend.
Rescue teams in Saarbrucken recovered 268 bodies and two survivors died overnight in the Luisenthal mine disaster. The Saarland Mining Authority reports 276 known dead with many still trapped, while about 100 workers are unaccounted for. Relatives gathered at the gate as doctors treated the injured with plasma.
Robert F. Kennedy toured Kyoto to Osaka meeting farmers and workers as Communists outside a textile mill jeered him with chants like Kennedy go home. Police kept the two sides apart while Kennedy and his party smiled and waved, then continued to Tokyo after the mill visit.
