A warm spell vanished as strong northerly winds sent Middletown temperatures from 70 yesterday afternoon to 38 this morning and a forecast of 15 by tomorrow. Officials warn of continued cooling with a chance of snow flurries tomorrow and Thursday. no moderation until Thursday.
Paris prepared for a radio and TV address by President Charles de Gaulle on the Algeria rebellion as security forces tightened across Paris and key Algerian cities. Police and tanks remained on alert while talks with rebels centered on a cease fire and possible independence after 131 years of French rule.
Cuba seeks anti U S action at the United Nations to counter last week’s anti Castro action in the OAS. Cuban delegate Mario Garcia-Inchaustegui opens debate charging U S aggression and interference, citing Kennedy’s import ban on Cuban tobacco worth about 35 million dollars yearly. The Czechoslovak Romanian resolution urges peaceful settlement without force. U S delegate Adlai Stevenson to speak. committee aims for a vote in 10 days.
Fidel Castro addressed a vast Cuban crowd at Jose Marti Plaza denouncing Kennedy and the U S embargo as hypocritical while Khrushchev pledged Soviet support. The United States said the tobacco ban would cost Castro about 35 million dollars annually and Cuba faced expulsion from the Inter-American system after Punta del Este vote.
Mrs Horst Buchholz gave birth to a 6 pound 10 ounce boy named Christopher at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. The child is the couple's first. Buchholz arrived from England Saturday night.
Five persons died and seven were injured when a small foreign car and another vehicle collided on U S Highway 460 eight miles east of Nashville Illinois. Victims include Ronald Spengier 22 Elaine Spengier 22 Dennis Stager 22 Janice Kay Bridges 22 all of Granite City Illinois and Joycelyn Denice Tracey 7 of Mount Vernon Illinois.
MEMPHIS Tenn AP A $6 million St Jude Research Hospital for Children opened after a gala dedication by Danny Thomas founder of the charity. The nonsectarian facility will offer free leukemia and other pediatric disease treatments. Gov Ellington Sen Kefauver Rep Davis and 400 telegrams of congratulations attended. Kennedy sent a message.
A prairie fire swept 1 to 2 miles wide and six miles long from the W. H. Lepper farm south of Kismet to near the Cimarron River northeast of Liberal. Winds up to 40 mph fanned the flames, destroying a barn and garage, burning four more farm homes, and torching 8 000 to 10 000 acres of southwest Kansas grassland. Rev. Harold French interrupted his Kismet church sermon to help fight the blaze.
William E. Stevenson former Oberlin College president arrived in Manila as the new U.S. ambassador to the Philippines and presented his credentials to President Diosdado Macapagal.
United Steelworkers leaders led by President David J. McDonald begin closed door conferences in Pittsburgh to map wage policy and demands for contract talks with Big Steel. The 425000-strong basic steelworkers contract expires in June and all parties eye an early settlement amid White House pressure for no strike and no stockpiling.
About 100 students believed aligned with a Communist dominated group attacked the U S Embassy in Jakarta tearing down the American flag over a Dutch troop plane refueling on U S territory en route to West New Guinea. Mary Manchester was injured. glass injured several others as vehicles were damaged. The protest followed a U S decision to bar Dutch troop planes from U S airfields and to restrict landing rights beyond a plan dated last Friday.
Negotiations began in Cincinnati between Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co and United Glass and Ceramic Workers AFL-CIO as the current three year contract nears expiration on February 16.
Attorney General Kennedy told Japanese Prime Minister Ikeda that U S policy will not neglect Japan during his six day visit. He stressed a proposed 5 cent per pound surcharge on cotton content in textiles imports and said the trend is toward lower tariffs. Kennedy also said closer ties with the European Economic Community won’t freeze Japan from the American market.
President Kennedy postponed his message to Congress on the international communications satellite system. He will address the issue again Wednesday and outline plans for private firms to participate while avoiding single firm dominance. Kerr proposes a $300 million, 5000 shares at $100,000 private entity to own the U.S. portion as FCC weighs nonprofit operation options.

Vatican City AP reports Gaetano Cardinal Cicognani, 80, prefect of the Congregation of Rites, died at his home in Vatican City from a heart attack. He was brother of Amleto Cardinal Cicognani, Vatican secretary of state.
In Campbell near Youngstown a car veered onto a one way street and plunged 300 feet down a slope into a railroad yard killing four relatives and injuring a fifth. Victims include Lloyd Cogar 22 and Jacqueline 22 of Youngstown and Richard Bonelli 13 and Irene Begala 47 of Struthers. Mrs Velma Smith survived with serious injuries.
