Soviet Zone in Germany Faces Worsening Economy
A British information service survey says the Soviet Zone of Germany is in a bad way economically and likely to deteriorate further. The counter blockade by the West has hit eastern Germany’s coal, iron, steel, textiles and machine tools harder than acknowledged, while Soviet calls for “more work” yield inferior products. Radio Leipzig and Deutschland Sender acknowledge the strain amid the 1948 currency reforms. The British trace the blockade to January 1948, intensifying through June and September, as Western retaliation gradually strangled the economy.
