Massive 7.5 quake devastates Guatemala City and region

A major earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck Guatemala City and rippled through Honduras Belize El Salvador and Mexico causing widespread damage. Reports varied on deaths with estimates up to 300 in Guatemala City as aftershocks hampered rescue efforts and power water and telephone services were disrupted.

Gunmen kill child and three other gunmen in Afars hostage incident

Four gunmen and one hostage were killed in the northeast African Afars and Issas during an attack on 30 French children aged 6 to 12 held aboard a ship or location at the territory entrance to the Red Sea. The rest of the children were released unharmed. The gunmen, tied to the Front for the Liberation of the Somali Coast, demanded independence from France. The French overseas ministry could not immediately confirm. The hostage death was reported as a girl.

Ten Die In Upper West Side Apartment Fire

A three alarm blaze in a six story Upper West Side building on West 94th Street near Riverside Drive killed ten people including eight children and left about 30 families homeless. The fire started shortly after midnight in a rear first floor unit and spread rapidly upward, with two deaths on the first floor and eight on the sixth floor before being controlled at 2 39 am.

Welfare payments traced to state employees in Ohio

At least 140 state employees in Ohio were found to collect welfare checks in addition to their payroll, some for up to 10 years. The three month probe covered Franklin Cuyahoga and Summit counties with 92 fraud cases in Franklin, 41 in Cuyahoga and 7 in Hamilton.
