The AP reports hundreds of thousands of Ohio workers may seek unemployment benefits as gas shortages trigger widespread layoffs. About 20 000 medium sized commercial customers face mandatory maintenance cuts by Columbia Gas of Ohio. Electric utilities report ample power but industrial demand has fallen. Schools may close further as gas use is restricted and transportation hampers fuel deliveries.
Long lines formed at the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services in Cincinnati as weather and gas shortages drove new jobless claims to rise sharply. Officials warned claims could climb fivefold from recent weeks, with about one million Ohio workers potentially out of work. Major employers such as Armco Steel kept many workers on shorter weeks, while Miami Carey Logan-Long Chester Products and Millen Industries all called partial or full shutdowns. Unemployment offices limited staff but extended hours 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. to handle the surge.
Officials of the Ohio Bureau of Employment Services Middletown office urge claimants to bring earnings documentation to speed processing. A W-2 or payroll stubs, a list of all employers over the past year, and a Social Security card or ID are required. Do not call. report based on last SSN digit. Eligibility requires 20 weeks in the base period. Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
