American and Nationalist forces press for an evacuation of the Tachens as air and sea fighting intensifies near Formosa. U S and Chiang allies debate protection for Quemoy and Matsu with US planning aid for refugees and possible carrier-led withdrawal.
The U N Security Council voted to invite Peiping spokesmen to join debate on a Formosa cease fire. Dag Hammarskjold was to relay the invitation after New Zealand's proposal and Soviet demands were considered. US envoy Lodge kept opposition to seating Red China, stressing no change in policy.
Taipei Formosa notes the Nationalists plan a censorship on Formosa after evacuations from the Tachen Islands begin. The move would be the first press censorship by the Nationalists on Formosa and follows a U S Seventh Fleet policy.
Pravda labeled the U S congressional authorization to use armed force near Formosa a rude provocation and accused Washington of an aggressive policy. The Soviet paper said China would unite Taiwan and nearby islands with its homeland and urged immediate withdrawal of U S forces.
A morning blaze in a 10 family building in Amsterdam New York killed eleven people including five children and the father of five. Eight bodies were recovered and five injured. The fire began around 1230 a m from an overflowing oil stove. Residents fled in nightclothes into freezing temperatures. An elderly woman and her mother were saved after being dragged from their ground floor flat. A patrolman forced entry to several apartments as the fire burned. Most residents were believed Puerto Rican.
In Chuckatuck Virginia six children aged 3 to 14 died when a fire trapped them on the second floor of a frame house. The father Robert L. Eley, 34, woke to a roaring sound and found flames cut him off from the upstairs as he investigated after everyone had gone to bed.
Philadelphia imposes a curfew for youths under 17 beginning 10:30 p.m. on weeknights and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Police record names of violators and repeat offenders face court with parents. curfew runs until 6 a.m. each day.
