President Johnson presses ahead on the budget and the State of the Union message with progress noted. He will receive a review call from George C. McGhee on West Germany developments and study major budget decisions with Budget Director Kermit Gordon.
Washington reports a two tenths of one percent rise in the consumer price index to 108.7 driven largely by higher new and used car prices amid strikes against General Motors and Ford. Housing, clothing, and medical fees also lifted costs.
In Washington an estimated 30 to 40 Republicans remain uncommitted as Charles Halleck and Gerald Ford vie for party leadership. With 140 GOP members voting by secret ballot Monday, 71 votes are needed. The undecided group includes some members of the Wednesday Morning Club, a moderates bloc seeking influence.
A C 46 cargo plane from Zantop Air Transport crashed in fog four miles southwest of Detroit Metro while attempting an instrument landing. Four aboard died. Victims named as Dale S. Grisham Ronald Reed Hugo Blair and Fallon. Aircraft came from Cleveland to Detroit carrying general cargo. Weather was foggy with half mile visibility and 300 foot ceiling.
Light rain and cooler temperatures are expected through tomorrow as a weak front nudges the mercury into the 40s tonight. Yesterday’s high reached 58 while today’s low dipped to 47.

AFL CIO official J W Jennings said local chairmen were told to remove picket lines and return to work after a restraining order issued in Columbus Georgia. The strike halted yard and freight engines on 8100 miles across 13 states and DC, affecting 16000 employees including 1200 firemen in major cities such as Washington Atlanta Birmingham New Orleans Memphis Louisville Greenville Columbia and Charlotte.
The United Nations General Assembly pursues an orderly adjournment while determining a two thirds majority for a Security Council seat for Jordan or Mali. President Quaison-Lackey and Secretary General Thant push a recess plan with voluntary funding to solve finances and resume Jan 11 without reopening the Soviet assessment dispute.
Nigeria began its first general election in four years of independence amid strong security. Riot squads guarded polling places as the 10,000 member army stood on full alert while opposition parties threatened a boycott led by the United Progressive Grand Alliance from the south. The North’s Nigerian National Alliance was favored to win, heightening southern restlessness over power balance in Parliament.
Viet Cong overran Binh Nghia district after a large three day battle near Saigon. U S forces recaptured the town but three helicopters were shot down and losses included two American enlisted men captured and several wounded. The fighting added to mounting U S casualties and rumors of a coup plot in Saigon.
