Veterans describe the Hong Kong flu with sleep urges chills and sweats fever dreams and fatigue. Symptoms vary but many report long sleep spells nightly dreams and lingering coughs and muscle pains while recovery offers only relief through rest fluids and aspirin.
A strong cold front swept the Miami Valley with snow flurries and sharp winds. Highs near 20 persist today and Monday as gusts above 50 mph cause damage across Ohio. A Dayton resident was injured after a wind throw hurled him into a building.
Israeli commandos crossed into Lebanon and bombed Beirut International Airport in retaliation for an Arab attack on an Israeli jet. Wounding not reported, nine aircraft damaged, flames and explosions seen as fires burned into the night. Beirut Radio and Lebanese authorities offered conflicting accounts of the damage.
Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman James Lovell and William Anders left Hickam Air Force Base Hawaii aboard a C141 jet for Ellington Texas arriving in Houston around 2 55 a m EST. The crew described their lunar flight and re entry with humor and pride as they headed home to families.
Dorothy Dolbey the national president of Church Women United praised the Apollo 8 astronauts for reading Bible verses while circling the moon. She sent a telegram to NASA in Houston thanking them for a Christmas Eve message that inspired a world of faiths and nonbelievers. Maddening O hair criticized the readings and said she will launch a mail campaign against prayer in space.
Two masked men armed with a machine gun robbed a Brink's armored truck on Canal Street in Boston's North End, escaping with about 506000 in cash from department stores receipts. Messenger Richard Haines, handcuffed and injured slightly, reported the incident as officers investigated at the scene.

Commander Lloyd Bucher testified that North Korean guards threatened to kill crewmen one by one to force a signed confession after the Pueblo was seized. He described terror tactics used during the 11 month captivity and said the abuse began shortly after the ship's Jan. 23 seizure off the North Korean coast.
