President Kennedy is ready to launch a new farm program described as modernized for the 1960s aimed at boosting farm income. Secretary Orville Freeman says the plan has the President’s general approval and will be included in a special agriculture message to Congress and in the State of the Union.

Pawnee Rock Kansas AP reports Bill Levingston found a woman's purse with a $92 check and $4 cash, plus keys and a Great Bend address. He drove 13 miles to Great Bend twice before learning she moved to Arkansas City. He mailed the purse, received no acknowledgment, and wrote asking if she got it. She replied with thanks and sent a $4 check that bounced.
Paroled convict Lynn E Houck admitted tying up 72 year old Rev Roy R Decker and leaving him to die in a burning farm home after failing a lie detector test He claimed the fire started accidentally when he plugged in an electric heater and denied dousing the minister with inflammable liquid He took the minister’s car key and $40 and fled in the car refuting the police theory of a planned arson for murder.
The admission came after a day of questioning that began when Houck was arrested at the home of his stepfather, Edwin Houck, less than a mile from the death scene.
Cincinnati police ask residents to report suspicious people after four deliberately set fires in northwest Cincinnati on Tuesday and Wednesday. Assistant Fire Chief Joseph Devine says about 20 suspicious fires have occurred in the area over two years.
TOKYO AP reports ten right wing extremists arrested on December 12 were indicted today on charges of subversive activities for plotting to assassinate Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda and other regime leaders.
Palm Beach AP report says Mrs. John F. Kennedy may delay her January trip to India and Pakistan due to her father in law Joseph Kennedy's illness. White House press secretary Pierre Salinger indicated a decision would come soon and noted the elder Kennedy’s health as a definite factor.
Three Laotian princes failed to reach a consensus on posts for a proposed unity government. Souphanouvong left Vientiane for Plaine des Jarres after Boun Oum refused joint talks. Souvanna Phouma gave no clear stance on remaining or negotiating, while Geneva was floated as a possible meeting site.
Edith Bolling Wilson, widow of Woodrow Wilson, dies at 89 after a month of failing health. Services set for New Year’s Day at Washington Cathedral with Very Rev Francis B Sayre Jr and Rev Malcolm Marshall officiating. She had long cared for Wilson since his stroke of 1919 and later oversaw papers and callers. Born Edith Bolling in Wytheville Virginia in 1872, she was previously married to Norman Galt before meeting Wilson in 1915.
The Arab League warned it would pull its 2,500 troops from Kuwait if British forces return. Britain feared Iraqi moves on Kuwait subsided after its show of strength in the Middle East. Deputy Secretary General Nafal said Arab forces will not join with Britain and Kuwait cannot be ordered to host foreign troops. The defense ministry ordered alert based on Middle East intelligence reports.
Hayden Planetarium official calls Hindu astrologers prediction of human destruction next February nonsense. Astronomers say a rare planetary grouping near Capricorn and Aquarius will not cause disaster, noting such alignments occur about every century and only spark fear.

John Edward Askew, 23, arrested in New York by the FBI five years after he and four others escaped from Scioto County Courthouse jail. He is held in a federal detention home while prosecutors initiate extradition.
On August 3 1956 Askew and four inmates escaped a jail. The others were recaptured quickly while Askew remained at large. He faces two burglary charges involving a drug store and a service station plus jail breaking.
