Chess Empire Finds a Home in Lindsborg Kansas
Fifteen grandmasters from five European countries spend December in Lindsborg a windswept Kansas town that has become a global chess hub. Russian émigré Mikhail Korenman runs Anatoly Karpov School of Chess funded by local business donations and a $216000 state grant. The event boosts tourism and local pride as U S Chess Federation names Lindsborg chess city of the year and Korenman chess organizer of the year. Local youth study chess with Korenman while the town leverages festivals and exhibitions to sustain its Swedish heritage and economy.
