Polluted water from the Christmas Day cyclone endangers Darwin survivors as disease threats grow in the northern Australian city. Local authorities warn of waterborne illness and scramble to supply clean water and medical aid to residents.
Lorton Reformatory officials and armed inmates moved toward terms to end the disturbance and free nine guards held hostage. Four prisoners executed a complex escape plan and police later found a gunshot wound in the vehicle used to flee the DC area prison near Washington.
Inmates seized ten guards during a Christmas night disturbance at Lorton Prison. Negotiators and officials worked toward an end to the stalemate while discussions with inmates, including leader Thomas Reed, revealed a plan to capture guards and exploit a watch tower, though officials later disputed the armament and stressed a resolution with DC Corrections Director Delbert Jackson.
In Jerusalem, Israeli surgeons amputated the right leg of 17-year-old Dejean Replogle of Jacksonville, Florida, four days after an Arab grenade attack. The Hadassah Hospital team reported the operation proceeded normally and noted the leg was removed above the knee while her parents, Mr and Mrs William Replogle, were present.
A Czech Canadian, Josef Homolov, 31, was jailed in Rome after attempting to hijack an Air India jumbo jet bound for Rome on Christmas Day. He brandished a knife and flashlight, threatened to crash, was overpowered in the cockpit as 154 passengers waited aboard during a two hour circle over the city. Homolov carried counterfeit Canadian money and a Bombay to New York ticket.
