New Postal Chief Emerges From Horatio Alger Tale
Elmer Theodore Klassen, named head of the U S Postal Service, rose from a 16 year old worker to president and CEO of a major firm before leading the postal reform era. Born in Hillsboro Kansas in 1908, he moved to California, started work at 12, and climbed via Harvard management training to top posts. He is described as blunt and decisive, yet reflective about rural roots and farming happiness.

He noted a Dec. 6 Gallup poll showing some gain while he trails Muskie, and argued endorsements won’t decide the 1972 race. He urged all candidates to agree on campaign contributions sources.
