The forecast calls for a cold Christmas period with temperatures in the 30s and lows near 18 tonight. Light snow or flurries are possible tonight and tomorrow, with moderation expected midweek but continued cold Thursday and Friday. Overnight low earlier today was 10 with a high yesterday of 28.
The nation’s holiday traffic toll early in the Christmas period stood at 304 deaths in first 22 days, with 44 fires and 37 other miscellaneous deaths, total 385. Howard Pyle of the National Safety Council warned toll could drop to 550 if trend continues. last year’s Christmas toll was 524. Weather problems and stormy conditions may have reduced highway travel, though driving remained hazardous in some areas. The all time record toll for a holiday is 706 in 1956. the lowest four day toll since WWII was 535 in 1951.
Two Japanese boats with 42 men aboard are missing after sending distress signals from a Pacific storm. Authorities report no further contact and the Japanese foreign office seeks aid from the New Zealand air force to search the area.
James R. Hoffa, president of the Teamsters, faces another mistrial as the $1 million conspiracy trial ends with a hung jury after 17 hours of deliberation. A farmer Robert Bateman aged 33 and nine of his children were killed when their one story wooden bungalow burned in Broughton Nova Scotia. Bateman helped his wife to safety then re entered to try to rescue the children and died. Firemen found the house leveled. Cause undetermined. Mrs Bateman walked half a mile in freezing weather and heavy snow to summon neighbors and was hospitalized for shock.
A sidewalk collapse before the Imperial House at 1 East 69th Street in Manhattan caused a ceiling collapse in the underground garage. Forty cars were damaged and the 100-car facility flooded two feet after a water pipe burst. No injuries were reported. tenants include Lucille Ball Jack Douglas and Rodney Rockefeller.
