British shoppers rush to spend holiday money amid fears of rising prices. German retailers report cautious buys and steady inflation while migrant workers cut home plans to keep jobs. Italian suburbs show austerity with cheaper gifts as layoffs protests persist.
Nine people died in the Neskaupstadur disaster on Iceland's east coast with three still missing. A large oil tank spilled over half its contents into the sea and the town endured heavy damage to housing and a major herring facility. Rescue efforts continued as weather eased and sea access remained the main route.

The Agriculture Department plans a 185000 dollar dining and office remodel for the secretary's guests to match city standards. George Knapp said the space on the third floor replaces a 15 year old basement facility and is part of wider cost saving measures tied to food stamp rules expected to save 645 million dollars annually.
A 32-year-old East Cleveland man Frederick Edge was arrested and charged with raping and robbing four women in the past week after a longhaired man was mistaken for a female victim. He allegedly used a flashing red light to pull vehicles over then forced entry and fled with money and IDs. Police noted recent arrival from Atchison, Kansas and a similar case under investigation.
